Built in 1790 and beautifully restored, The Old Peddler’s House has 2 bedrooms (sleeping 8), 3 full baths, a living/family room and dining room, a large kitchen with eating area and a laundry room with washer and dryer. There is a fireplace in every room with the living room fireplace usable. There are comfortable rockers on the front porch and a large deck with a dining table/chairs and Adirondack chairs overlooking a creek. The setting is peaceful, quiet and secluded, surrounded by woods and meadows and located at the end of a mile-long gravel lane.
The house was built in 1790, the same timeframe as Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. It was originally a humble single-room farmer’s cabin with a fireplace and a narrow staircase to a second room above. In 1830, a mirror-image cabin was built adjoining it, doubling its size. A smaller rear “shed” addition was added in the early 1900s. The cabin has been lovingly restored to keep its historical features intact and tastefully add modern conveniences, including washer & dryer, dishwasher, television and Internet.
The Old Peddler’s House is a scenic hour’s drive from the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the homes of 3 Founding Fathers/Presidents (Jefferson, Madison and Monroe) and many Civil War battlefields (Appomattox, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Petersburg). It is a little over a mile from fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the scenic James River and is about 2.5 hours from Colonial Williamsburg. It is 40 minutes from Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. There are 6 wineries within an hour’s drive, including Donald Trump’s and Dave Matthew’s on Carter’s Mountain, along with apple picking. Several apple cider places, including Bold Rock Cider, are about 40 minutes west.
The cabin is part of a 250-acres working cattle farm, home to grass-fed cows, horses, free-range chickens and friendly cats and dogs. The farm has a swimming pond and a children’s’ fort built in a copse of trees overlooking a creek for kids to explore and enjoy.
